The Spotswood High School Meteorology class got to hear a special presentation from Chief Meteorologist Dan Zarrow today. Mr. Zarrow visited our school to talk about what it’s like to be a radio broadcast meteorologist for NJ 101.5. Born and raised in New Jersey, Mr. Zarrow spent some time after graduating from Cornell University forecasting and storm chasing in Oklahoma. He “caught” three tornadoes in fact, which means he observed them safety from about a mile away! After a few years of that he moved back to NJ and landed a freelancing job with News 12 NJ and eventually a full-time position opened up with the radio station NJ 101.5. He discussed how he determines the forecast each day, which includes synthesizing a massive amount of data taken from various weather stations across the state, weather balloons and satellites. Multiple forecasts are determined for various parts of the state, including northern, central, and southern counties.

Mr. Zarrow took student questions and let them know what types of courses are required to take in both high school and college to become a meteorologist- lots of science and math! He says he loves his job because he gets to meet very interesting people everyday who visit the radio station. Although he has very early hours that require him to be at the station at 3:00 am, he enjoys the work and has adjusted to the hours. We thank Mr. Zarrow for visiting our class today!
